dat quad core Xeon with 8GB RAM... Tossed in a spare HD so now it has 250GB and 500GB (both 7200RPM) drives. Waiting for the SSD to arrive. It’s got a Xeon 3.06GHz quad core and an NVIDIA FX1800 workstation class gfx card.
The other desktop I built 2 years ago, i7 3770K, 16GB RAM, AMD 7870, SSD + 1TB 7200RPM

What do you do for a living that seems like overkill

Just finished grad school for digital media. Right now I’m applying to jobs.
The Xeon was actually fucking CHEAP (got all the upgrades for it under $300 AND the system itself too)
Game design, video editing, Photoshop, sometimes VM-ing stuff

I wish I was good at games so I could have an excuse to build a kick ass PC.

Seems you got a great deal.

Thanks. I tried to get the best I could for less than $300.

Believe me, I would love to join. I’m right now neither. The newest console I have is a PS1 and I’m doing the best I can with Mac.

At some point later this year I want to join the glorious PC master race and get a gaming computer. Primary goal is to be able to play DiRT Rally (seriously, not being able to play it is killing me), though I intend to get in on this “Steam” action and play some other stuff as well. What would you suggest and what would I need to budget?

That’s a fair bit of computing power for $300, +1up

How much are you willing to spend?
Two things that are worth it: An ssd for at least the operating system (and maybe a few of your most used programs/games), and then a standard hdd for everything else.
My dad got me a 144Hz monitor (so it goes up to 144 frames/sec), and it actually is soooo nice, especially in racing games like F1 and whatnot, if you can afford that, do it, it’s worth it. (I think it was around $250)

You could build a pretty nice rig for less than $1000...
I just whipped this up for ya

I left out the case, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor since those are preferences.

So true, if you take your time you can build a more than decent one for $800. That’s what I did, it took me around 6 months since I was watching cost of all parts and waiting for specials.

Go with what Nibby posted. The thing to really keep in mind is how prices fluctuate given the time of the year, and buy one item at a time (unless you have a local shop like MicroCenter) that has good in-store bundles. Mine has really good deals on CPU+MoBo, stuff that is almost $100 cheaper than anything I’ve ever found online. So research and patience. Also DiRT Rally is seriously fucking amazing. Amazing. Did I mention amazing? But it’s rather taxing on your system. And as crimson suggests, if you can invest in a 144hz monitor you’ll never go back to 60hz standard monitors. It’s night and day, and they’re not even that expensive. Picked mine up for $220, with 1 year no interest financing. Kind of a steal if you ask me
